James Jean “Rebus” Exhibition
![](http://www.hypebeast.com/image/2011/03/james-jean-rebus-exhibition-1.jpg)
Martha Otero opened its doors last night to the latest exhibition from Los Angeles-based artist James Jean, titled Rebus. For this new body of work, Jean presented paintings, drawings and a wall installation. The subject matter revolved around a fictionalized subconscious representation of deities in an apocalyptic decaying romanticized setting. Jean’s visual symbolism is composed of an amalgamation of lyrically gestural, expressionistic, energetic, abstracted forms from highly detailed images to freely inscribed graffiti. “Rebus” will remain open through April 30, 2011. Tyler, a skinny 19-year-old with a booming voice and a slightly gapped overbite, sits cross-legged on an unmade bed sheet in a Philadelphia hotel room. Over a tray of cinnamon sticks and a half-closed MacBook he gushes about his dreams (winning a Grammy Award) and heroes (Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes).
For hours Tyler remains tethered to one spot on the bed, yet he seems to be moving constantly. His imagination travels as he pretends to be a secret agent, or that the room’s furniture is slowly coming to life. He shows off a sketchbook filled with his brightly colored marker drawings of doughnuts and cats, ideas for clothing designs and chicken-scratch poetry. Flipping to a portrait of a seemingly jolly, fat-faced man he pauses.

Acure Digital Vending Machine
![](http://www.hypebeast.com/image/2011/03/acure-digital-vending-machine-0.jpg)
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, something else comes along that’s completely awesome. Sort of like these new, high tech digital touchscreen vending machines that have been installed throughout Tokyo’s metro system. The machines, which were designed by Japanese industrial designer Fumie Shibata, features a 47-inch touchscreen display with a digital camera mounted at the top. As individuals approach the device, an internal processor interprets sensory data to determine their age and sex and recommends products based on this data. When not in use by a customer, the vending machine engages its “intelligent marketing” system which displays advertisements appropriate to the time of day, temperature and season.Props to Designboom and Hypebeast
